Facebook

Post by Kit on Sun 30 May 2010, 2:15 am

No facebook thread yet? But there's so much to talk about! All the interesting things that the people I never see are getting up to. I like to be informed about everything ever so this is just great.

But seriously. I think facebook has gone wrong somewhere along the way. It used to be a nice cozy little networking site for college students, but now it's been overrun with people who make a "like" page about every-fucking-thing that they experience, like "I like it when the butter melts on my toast". Sure it's nice, but it doesn't need a whole page!

I'm also sick of these "LOL JK" pages. I think about 80% of the pages on there aren't worth being pages, it should just be stuff like bands and whatever, celebrities.

Anyway.

[/rant] for now.

I entirely agree, sick of fan pages of groups for everything under the sun. I generally hate most people on Facebook so I could either delete it and not have updates about the people I actually communicate with, or try and ignore the bad stuff as much as possible.. which is what I'm doing now.

Facebook Purity makes it SLIGHTLY more bearable at the fact my news feed is now free of people liking things, or doing app stuff, or becoming friends with people.

Facebook used to be awesome, simple profile layouts, no lame groups and you didn't have to see everyone becoming friends with people you don't even know every minute.

i've also noticed recently it's slowly turning into myspace with peoples profile photos, ah god.

THEN AGAIN, it's really useful to get in touch with people as so many are on it and organise events like birthdays and stuff (people who don't put them as private are just stupid)
(i'm sure there will be another social networking site soon which everyone will move over to though..)

It's just gone too far now, the great thing about Facebook was how simple it was, what you saw is what you got, an easy way to keep in touch with people.

I've mentioned this before but I genuinly saw this once, "_____ likes drinking when your thirsty" I mean come on..
The "LOL jk" page was funny when I saw the first 1, 2 and even 3, but after that it's just so stupid now. They're just basically saying what someone does or doesn't do, nothing clever about it anymore.

I think that's a good way of putting it actually, it's just a massive joke that's gone way too far.
Like with the fan pages, it was kind of fun in the start to become a fan of sandwiches along with all the bands and comedians and etc, but it is just annoying.

And with all the pages you have to like before you can even see what they are about! Usually with something ambiguous title like "OMG HOLY CRAP BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN EVER YOU MUST LIKE THIS" which just makes me think it's made by a crazy person or a liar. If it was really that amazing it probably would have been in the news. But anyway, you can't click like on something before you can see it, how can you commit to liking something with so little information?!

Possibly the greatest jscript on earth.

Works with Greasemonkey add-on on Firefox, but native with Chrome. Basically removes shite from your news feed, but you can access it if need be by pressing the little show link at the top.
http://www.fbpurity.com/

Application Whitelist

The application whitelist lets you specify particular applications, whose messages you *do* want to see on your homepage. The script comes with a default list of applications that will not be hidden by the F.B. Purity app filter.

At present this list consists of the following applications: FB for Iphone, FB for Blackberry, FB for Palm, FB for Android, Tweetdeck, Digsby, Tumblr and Selective Twitter.

For instructions on how to edit the list, to remove or add applications to this list, see the
F.B. Purity Application Whitelist Guide

Extras Blacklist

By default the "Extras" that the script hides are:

"Became a Fan Of"
"Joined a Group"
"Became a Friend of"
"Is Attending an event"
"Attended an Event"
Additional optional "Extras" that can also be hidden, but are shown by default are:

"Commented on/Likes Status"
"Tagged in/Likes/Commented on Photo"
"Tagged in Album"
"Commented on/Likes Album"
"Commented on/Likes Link"
"Wall Comments"
"Group Wall Comments"
"Page Wall Comments"
"Posted an Event"

Just downloaded that. I do tend to join fb groups/fan pages, but I think thats only because they are there. Now I can't see them, I sure won't miss it! lol

It's brilliant, jut remember to update it every so often. It won't tell you its updated but you'll soon notice when you see apps and stuff on your news feed, so just download the new version!

Holy shit yes. I occasionally join then leave just to explain the difference between "your" and "you're". It actually makes me furious when people don't get it, or when they do but they just don't bother to do it right.
