Tour Memories!

Post by ChumbaWumba on Tue 03 Jan 2012, 5:54 am

Since ES have been touring for a long while now and a few of you here on the forums are tour veterans thought it'd be nice for everyone to share their favourite and funny tour stories and memories from the past few years seeing Shikari live whether it was on your own, with mates or with any members here on the forum! Very Happy

If you have any tour stories that weren't at Shikari shows but with other members of the forum share them here too!
_________________________________________________________________________

Starting this off with the Hatfield Xmas Show '10. Unbelievably only the second time I'd seen Shikari ever and my first show that wasn't in the West Midlands! The year we got that shitload of snow that totally destroyed the UK's road system. Left Luton at about midday in Lee's car as we'd been to see Set Your Goals (twice!) the night before, sat nav telling us we'd get to the Hatfield Travelodge in about 20 minutes. Blair Kelly being the hero that he is chose to take the train in and then walk all the way since there was no room left in the car without any directions or map to help him on the way.

We were all pissing ourselves since we thought we'd get their well before him... until we got on the M1 motorway. Stand still traffic for nearly 8 hours, the junction we needed to take had been closed off. Didn't get to the Tlodge until about 8 and when we finally did get to the venue, ES were already about 4/5 songs into their set hahaha! Took Blair 2 hours walking through the snow not knowing where he was going, wearing nothing but a Shikari tee, shorts and some battered trainers and he still got there a good 6 hours before us!

I was stuck in the middle backseat sipping on Strongbows the entire time while we all listened to Lee's iPod and sat in disbelief at the entire situation. Many 'fucks' were said and I'm pretty sure Kev and me had to go pee about 10 times between us in the time it took us to move 20 meters up the road. So much for 20 minutes! Razz

At the time it was hell but looking back that show and the whole weekend is up there with my all time favourites. Was also the first Shikari show I went to after joining The Zone, the first time I got to taste the infamous Galahad beer and the first time I met most of you guys too! Smile

The first time I saw Shikari was one of my favorites for sure. It was back in 2009 right after the Common Dreads release. I was in complete obsession with ES and my friends being the dicks that they can be would always give me shit for it. We saw them in this little dance club place called Jaguar Club. In the beginning of the set Rou jumped into the crowd to pump everyone up and my friends thought it would be hilarious to give Rou a huge wedgie. When he got back on stage he was re-arranging his pants and stumbling around and then he mutters in the mic, "fuckin' wedgie..."

Then... during the SYNAW breakdown Rory was standing on top of a huge amp stand and my friend made their just to untie his Rory's shoes. I was so mad at them that day omg, I couldn't bare it. But looking back, it was pretty funny haha.

Seeing Jonny Sniper live on Toursick 2010 was pretty amazing too. Still one of my favorite songs by the boys.

My favorite memory is definitely Warped Tour 2011 though. I got on top of a human pyramid and Rou did his little thumbs up thing and was like "big up to the guy on top". I was so freaking happy after that. I also got pretty emotional too, not gonna lie.

First one was Newcastle O2 academy in '09, can't remember too much from it now other than it was amazing haha

Evolution Fest was an amazing weekend, had a great time with my friends and just generally enjoyed the weather and banter

30STM shows, less said about other bands other than ES the better.

Hatfield was a bizarre one for me, hadn't met anyone from the forum and went down with my mate Dunn, made a long trek and had a pretty awesome time, woke up in the Tlodge and found chips scattered everywhere in the corridor, can only assume it was one of you guys

Newcastle O2 academy was the first ES gig where I actually met some of you guys and first one since becoming 18, was pretty memorable

Rock city was a good 'un aswell, loved the venue, didn't however enjoy the ride home, needed to piss for 100 miles of the journey, was awfullll!

Hopefully will be able to see them many more times in 2012 and onwards and meet more of you guys Very Happy

Hatfield 2010, met most people and had to wait hours with Jess, Jack, Fratson and Andy for a bloody train at the station because of the snow. Just remember singing the Bed Intruder song with Eilidh and Tom the whole way to the venue, getting snuck into the afterparty by Horan giving me his wristband and Kev and Marie buying me cider. Oh and Coops arguing with the person at the walk thru McDonalds because of a discount, Horan throwing up behind the sofabed in Tlodge and wiping his blood on the walls and Kev spraying everyone with the contents of a fire extinguisher. Pretty unforgettable night!

Burgess, I swear down I've seen you at one or two gigs before, like.

My memory-forming has been poor for the last few years (old age setting in), but some highlights for me were:

- The look on our Alex's face when we arrived at the Newcastle Academy in Oct '09 as The Devil Wears Prada were just coming on stage. He'd never heard metal music before, and I don't think he liked it.

- "Why is Jo Wiley bleating on about delays as I'm bombing down the A1 to the Hatfield Christmas '10 show? It's been clear the whole way and I can only be a few miles away OH SHIT SNOW, car is sliding everywhere, now I'm in a traffic jam and I'm low on fuel so I better peel off at the next junction and spend an hour driving round aimlessly and getting stuck in an abandoned housing estate until I find a petrol station. Oh, and now I don't have a clue where I am. Nor do I have a Sat Nav or a map."

- Finally making it to the Travelodge, encountering a very drunken Bliss in the halls and offering him some Pringles, necking a pint of cider in my room, buying a Coke for a lass downstairs, and randomly hooking up with half the Zone crew to walk over to the show but being too crippled with snow-shock, shyness and sobriety to actually talk to anyone. Hung out at the back of the room for the show because I get raging claustrophobia at gigs and kept making eye contact with some well fit lass that I'm sure I know from home, but still can't place. Attempted talking to a French girl after the gig before remembering that I haven't spoken French in ten years, got Charn a pint of cider, went for a smoke with Horan, got Charn a pint of water, went for a smoke with Horan, then fucked off back to the Tlodge.

- Trolling round Amsterdam for fucking HOURS on my own because I didn't have anyone's number, then spying Hobbsy and introducing myself, then seeing more of Hobbsy later, telling Arun to be cool about something before immediately shrieking and jumping out the way of a tram, getting constant electric shocks off that games-maching-jukebox-whatever in Bilbo's, and then spending some more hours walking round the Dam by myself the next day because I texted Jennie and Ginge and they never got back to us.

- Costco pizzas, bacon sandwiches, and failing to get the party started in Newcastle Oct '11.

- A scene from the Nottingham afterparty:
"Marie, is that one of them?"
"Yes, Alex, that's Chris, the bassist."
"Are you going to go and talk to him?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"I've never met him properly before, I don't have anything interesting to say, and he's clearly having a row with his girlfriend."
"Ah. What about that guy? Is that one of them?"

I had a great time at yours! After 3 shows and going out after I was secretly happy we got to chill out at yours for a bit with that MASSIVE pizza. Also words could not really describe how happy I was when you offered to put my clothes in the wash Marie hahaha, the thought of carrying them around for 2 more days sweaty was killing me!

Wasn't it my car? He pissed on it that night. Then tried to get Matt to take him on a drive, and if they got pulled over because Matt didn't have a license and Kev was drunk, he could say "no no, it's ok, it's a driving lesson, don't worry".

- Me and Coops getting a lap dance off a topless model after the 2nd Camden show

- Sharing a shower with Chumba (what an experience that was)

- Managing to burn our faces with neon paint in Glasgow (my god that was a mistake!)

- Warner and his service bell that he was obsessed with after RedFest

- Having Warner sitting on my shoulders with the headcam on, running through the crowd into a circle pit

- The amazing walk through the snow to get to the Hatfield show

Last but not least...

- Getting naked in Melkweg, Amsterdam for the aftershow party

- Norwich '07, seeing them properly for the first time (I'd seen them before but that didn't count as I didn't know who they were/pay attention) and holding onto my friends hand so hard because we thought we were going to die.

- The afterparty at one of the Astoria 2 shows in '08, met this dude who used to work with Rory and thinking he was going to stalk us back to our hotel (he didn't!)

- Me, my sister and Gaby being on the tube with Batty C after The Roundhouse show, who was wasted and didn't know where the afterparty was and seemed to find 'Goodge Street' hilarious.

- The Borderline show, being knocked onto the stage and almost breaking Rory's thingamyjigs (I don't know, the things on the stage with knobs and what-not!) and feeling really bad about it (plus it hurt!)

- Asking Rob after the Borderline show where he disappeared to, he said he had to 'crawl away' as he thought he was 'going to die'.

- Loosing everyone during their set at Reading last year, like 2 songs in. Getting hoisted on some randomers shoulders during Mothership and having the perfect view!

- Almost melting at the daytime Brighton show a few years back, it was a warm day and the venue was like under the road on the seafront. Sweatiest show!

- Being in a massive circle pit at Milton Keynes Bowl at Projekt Rev '08, in glorious sunshine.

From Hatfield I remember getting very drunk, blacking out for 5 hours, coming round and loosing my phone in the snow, walking back to the Travel Lodge with some chick who turned out to be off here (Shez?), hearing someone order a horrendous amount of chicken nuggets from Maccy D's, smoking from some guys pipe outside Maccy D's, watching Horan throw up over the back of that sofa and finally narrowly avoiding being sprayed with that fire extinguisher by Kev.
Woke up in the morning feeling like someone had hit me in the stomach with a baseball bat and proceeded to chunder like I never knew possible.

Never again.
