People are getting well annoyed at Andy Carroll leaving Newcastle, but I've got to be honest; if I were offered an obscene wage like he's been offered i'd probably do the same, who wouldn't?

Most of the annoyance is coming from people who aren't Newcastle fans though. Andy Carroll has only played half a season of top flight professional football in his career, yet he's going to become the eighth most expensive player of all-time. It's more than Barcelona spent on David Villa, who was arguably one of the best strikers in the world for a good three or four seasons before he left Valencia. Also more than Man Utd spent on Rooney, and Rooney had been playing almost three years of first-team football in the Premiership before Everton sold him.

The money in English football is killing the game.

EDIT: Just seen your location is Newcastle, will probably explain more about your post. Apologies.

No worries, not really into it too much myself, just my facebook feed is clogged up with mates who are nearly in tears over it and it's getting on my tits.

Quite true. It's becoming more about what a player's being paid/is worth than their standard of playing. They are paying ridiculous amounts for him although I bet with the wage he's been offered (can't remember what it was but it's huge) he's not too fussed.

I know what you mean BUT it almost makes a little sense if you look at it like this. If newcastle stay up this season they will get around £27million for not just getting relegated the season after being promoted to the prem. Newcastle have to look at Carroll and think "is he the player that is going to keep us up this season?" if he is, hes worth £27million to them straight off, plus all the money they get from sponsers etc for not going down, plus the money he is actually worth. On paper he is worth nowhere near £35million, but he might be worth that to Newcastle. This is exactly what Ian Holloway was saying about Charlie Adam when Liverpool offered Blackpool £4million for him.

Regardless though it is a stupid amount of money, at the end of the day its cause Torres has decided he wants to leave and they have had to find a new forward very quickly.

Oh and they just said on Sky Sports News, his wage is going from around £30k a week to around £80k a week, hardly surprising he put in a transfer request.

didn't pardew ask him to put in a transfer request?

anyway, what's getting on my tits is the fact there's a massive uproar whenever a british player goes for a fuck load of money.
in the UK, we're so used to buying in foreign players for loads of money, it's just become normal.
oh wow £17 million for someone i've never heard of, but he's played in la liga so he's obv worth it.
as soon as a large price tag is slapped on a british player, it seems we just don't understand it.
i'd probably say it has to do with the fact that a number of the biggest players in the UK for the past 8 years or whatever (Gerrard, Lampard etc.) have been at the same club for so long, so we've never got so see the value clubs would pay for them cause they've not moved on.

Andy Carroll is 22, £35million will be a steal if he bangs in goals for the next 13 years at Liverpool. He's probably going to become an England regular too.
Darren Bent is already smashing in goals for Villa, his record is fantastic, I'd say he's worth the money again if he stays for a long time, and chances are he will when Villa finally get to where they should be in the table.
Can't be worse than what was spent on Forlan and Veron anyway and countless other shite that we've seen over the years.

Burgess makes several good points. Carrol probably isn't worth £35mil...but considering his age, his form, his potential and everything else I think people are over-reacting. If he were called Pablo Såntanta or some shit we wouldn't hear a squeak from people.

£35m for a player with six months' top flight experience is batshit crazy, whichever way you want to dress it up.

but his track record is awesome.

england u19's debut - scored
england u21's debut - scored
premiership debut vs west ham in 09 - scored
club top scorer in championship last season and thus far this season.

£35 mill is excessive, but if his goals even get Liverpool European football this year it's worth it in their eyes.

That still doesn't constitute £35m though. You've just told me that scoring on your debut at youth international level, one good season in the Championship, and half a season in the Premiership is enough to justify Liverpool making him the eighth most expensive player of all-time.

More than Villa, Rooney, Drogba, Torres when Liverpool bought him, and as many others as you want me to name. Relative to those, there's not a chance Carroll can be value for money at £35m.

Come the end of the season, I aim to have a YouTube compilation video of that horrible little cunt getting tackles like that off just about everyone in the SPL. If only every team had an Ian Black.

true true.
but he's 22, so every level upto now he's shown he can do it.
i still think £35 million is over valued, but i reckon if he lives up to what he's shown, he could be a worthy investment if he stays for over 10 years.

That's a massive if though. There's probably more chance he'll end up in jail than stay at Liverpool for a decade.

Hilarious start though. 2 goals in 3 minutes.

Love how the ESPN commentators were saying Arsenal had it totally wrapped up within 30 minutes.
